1. What is a Player Moderator?

X-Scape has always worked extremely hard to make sure that RuneScape is a safe and pleasant place to play.

To ensure that RuneScape stays such a place, X-Scape introduced Player Moderators to the game. Player Moderators are normal players of the game, just like you. They still play to complete quests and increase their levels, but because they have shown themselves to be a trustworthy and active reporter, they have been invited by Jagex to monitor the game while they are playing and to take appropriate action when they see people in breach of the Rules of RuneScape.

Player Moderators have two ways to deal with breaches of the Rules of RuneScape in the game:

The Report Abuse button
This is the same Report Abuse button that all other players have, but a dedicated team of Jagex staff members will be assessing each of these reports as a matter of priority.

Temporary mutes
In extreme breaches of the Rules of RuneScape, Player Moderators also have the option to mute players for 48 hours. To avoid the possibility of this power being abused, each mute will be checked by a member of Jagex staff as soon as possible to ensure that each action taken by a Player Moderator is completely correct.

Since Player Moderators look no different from any other character, to avoid confusion Jagex has made all Player Moderators very easy to identify. Every Player Moderator will have a small silver crown next to their name when they type a message. Below is an example of the crown you will see next to the name of a Player Moderator.

In addition to Player Moderators having silver crowns next to their names, Jagex Moderators also have a crown visible when they type, although this one will be gold.

If you see ANYONE in-game saying they are a Player Moderator or member of Jagex staff who does not have the necessary crown, then you should report them immediately for Impersonation by clicking the Report Abuse button. This also applies if a character says that their 'other account' or 'main' is a Player or Jagex Moderator. No real Player Moderator or member of staff would say this. We do not have Player Moderators or staff in disguise and hidden. Neither will a crown or Moderator status be 'in processing'.

Player Moderators receive no extra benefits, monetary or otherwise, in or out of the RuneScape environment other than the silver crown, their mute abilities and access to the Player Moderator Centre. Player Moderators get no reward other than the satisfaction of a job well done and are not paid for the role they perform for us. They do not get free membership, items, skills or any other bonus for their character in any way whatsoever, nor are they provided with any advance or behind the scenes information that isn't publicly available to all players.

All RuneScape Player Moderators are also FunOrb Player Moderators.

2. How does someone become a Player Moderator?

We keep track of potential Player Moderators through a variety of methods.

We review their behaviour in the forums, the number and quality of abuse reports sent in and how useful and friendly they have been to other players in the game.

The likelihood of a particular player becoming a Player Moderator is not based on their combat level or total level of their character, but on the maturity and behaviour of all their characters in the game. This means that while you will not see a player fresh from the tutorial given Player Moderator status, you may see some with lower combat levels than you are expecting. Remember that we do investigate accounts fully before giving them Player Moderator status, so if you see the crown, the player will have earned it.

We do not give out details on how close someone is getting to becoming a Moderator, but rest assured that if you are doing what is needed to become a Player Moderator then we will take notice.

If you are selected to be a Moderator, a message will be sent to your account. Once you have accepted and the confirmation has been received, you will get your silver crown and Moderator abilities.

All our Player Moderators are hand-picked by Jagex staff. We DO NOT consider requests to become Moderators, so please do not send any in. The best advice we can give someone wanting to become a Player Moderator is to continue playing RuneScape in a good and honest way and report genuine abuse as and when you see it. In addition to this, having a positive presence on our official Forums would increase your chances of being identified as a trustworthy player.

We do not accept recommendations from players for possible Player Moderators so again, please DO NOT send these in to us. If a player proves themselves worthy, we will take note and may offer them a position as a Player Moderator.

If you have a previous punishment this does not necessarily end your chances of becoming a Player Moderator. We take into account the time at which an offence took place and the player's subsequent behaviour. If this indicates that they have learnt from their mistakes and have made a positive impact on the game, it can result in the player being considered for the role of Player Moderator.

3. How can I recognise a Player Moderator?

In-game, you can recognise a Player Moderator's chat by the silver crown that appears before their name, as shown below:

4. Do Player Moderators have to help me?

Player Moderators are there to help monitor fair play in the game. It is up to the individual Player Moderator whether they offer in-game assistance and they are under no obligation to do this. Their role is merely to report offences as and when they see them.

5. Should I report abuse to a Player Moderator, or use the 'Report Abuse' button?

We encourage all of our players to continue using the report abuse feature to help us deal with rule-breakers. It would be better to receive one report from everyone that sees an incident than not to receive one at all. If a Player Moderator is present, you can ask them to help in reporting abuse. Please remember, however, Player Moderators want to play RuneScape as well and they are not obliged to help.

6. What should I do if a Player Moderator is abusive to me?

If you see a Player Moderator being abusive to someone then you should report the event using the Report Abuse button. We will then investigate the matter and take any appropriate action. If, however, we find that a player has falsely reported a Player Moderator we will take action against that person.

7. What is a Forum Moderator?

These are players that have been hand picked to represent Jagex, to assist us in providing forums that can be enjoyed by everyone. They only have powers in the Forums and cannot take any action against a player in the game. They cannot help you with ban appeals, password recoveries or billing issues. Should you need more information on any of these issues, then please read the relevant articles in the Customer Support section of the website.

8. How does someone become a Forum Moderator?

Forum Moderators will be selected by Jagex staff only. Please do not ask about becoming a Forum Moderator via the forums themselves or a Customer Support query. Such requests may reduce your chances of being chosen.

Forum Moderators are normal players, not Jagex employees, who have been hand-picked by Jagex, as they have managed to prove consistently that they have the temperament and judgment needed to help us monitor fairness and rule-breakers in the forums.

The best way to maximise your chances of being asked to become a Forum Moderator is to carry on posting in the forums in accordance with the Rules of RuneScape and forum rules and being helpful and friendly to other players less experienced than yourself. We also expect any future Forum Moderators to be able to express their opinions clearly.

10. What benefits do Forum Moderators receive?

Forum Moderators receive no benefits above those of normal players, other than a green background on their posts in the Forums and the powers necessary to moderate the Forums.

11. What is a Jagex Moderator?

A Jagex Moderator is a member of staff who works at the Jagex office in one of our various departments. These are most likely to be Customer Support staff in game either to answer your questions and ensure that everyone is enjoying the game, or to investigate serious rule-breaking.

Jagex Moderators will ALWAYS have a gold crown next to their name when they speak in the chat window and they are the ONLY people with 'Mod' before their name, so you can identify them:

If you see ANYONE saying they are a member of Jagex staff in game who does not have the gold crown then you should report them immediately for Impersonation by clicking the Report Abuse button. This also applies if a character says that their 'other account' or 'main' is a Jagex Moderator. We do not have 'undercover staff', nor will a gold crown ever be 'in processing'.

If in doubt about a character saying they are a Jagex Moderator, then feel free to report them, as a real Jagex Moderator will be able to deal with the report.

12. How does someone become a Jagex Moderator?

The only way to become a Jagex Moderator is to be employed by Jagex itself. This means that you will need to be successful in an application for one of the available positions. After you have started working you will be given a Jagex Moderator character for work purposes. We do not upgrade game characters to Jagex Moderators and you cannot use these characters to play the game on.

14. Can I trade or duel with a Jagex Moderator?

Jagex Moderators CANNOT trade items or money with other players under any circumstances or for any reason, they are also unattackable and therefore cannot be fought or duelled.

15. Do Jagex Moderators have to help me?

When you see a Jagex Moderator in-game, they will endeavour to answer any questions you may have.

Please note that some Jagex Moderators will not be there to answer questions but will be investigating a specific breach of the Rules of RuneScape or a possible bug. If these Jagex Moderators do not respond then please do not be offended, as they are working at making the game better for everyone.

If you do not get an answer to your question, you should check the Game Guide for the information you were looking for.

16. Do Jagex Moderators give out items or money?

No, we CANNOT give out free items or money in-game for ANY reason. DO NOT ask us for free items or money in game as this just stops us answering more relevant questions from other players.
